A Superlative Sports Car

Bugatti’s new Chiron opens a can of plaudits

At this year’s Geneva International Motor Show, the presence of Bugatti’s Chiron attracted plenty of accolades and more than a few curious onlookers. This world premiere of Bugatti’s much-vaunted super sports car line hogged the limelight for its unprecedented 1,500hp – a first for production vehicles, with a high torque of 1,600 Nm and a claim of zero to 200km/hr in a mind- boggling 6.5 seconds.

This latest generation in Bugatti’s long lineage is
named in honour of Louis Chiron, the racing driver etched in the company’s annals
for his grand prix triumphs in the 1920s and 1930s. The present-day vehicle’s high-performance features, developed at the company’s headquarters in Molsheim, means it may well break the current world speed record – which is held by Bugatti.

The manufacturer says it is limiting the maximum speed of the Chiron to 420km/hr for road use. A base price of €2.4 million (RM10.8 million) plus local taxes has seen over 170 Chirons sold worldwide, with only 500 planned for the entirety of its production.
