The Magical Carpet Chairs of Stelios Mousarris

Floating in a most peculiar way

Cypriot designer Stelios Mousarris likes illusions. His Wave City coffee table is mind-bending in an Inception-style way, with his Wave City dining table taking the surreal image even further. And now, from his magic hat, Mousarris has conjured up another fantastical creation – the Carpet Chair.

Using Persian carpets, each handmade over four months, Mousarris then takes the carpets designed in collaboration with artist Jan Blythe and transforms them into chairs. Using 6mm steel as a structure, then carpet is then bound to the frame, making the carpet appear to hover in mid-air like the magic carpets of the Arabian Nights. Each carpet is unique and each chair is bespoke, ranging from a simple s-curve settee to a grand polygonal throne with a long train. The inspiration for this came from something mundane: Mousarris was at his parents’ house, and while his mother was cleaning, he noticed that one of the house carpets had be flung over the sofa, appearing to float…

The Carpet Chair sells for €12,000 (RM55,200).
