The new Norwegian Joy cruise ship has a world’s first – a Ferrari race track at sea

making waves

Wheels at sea are generally found on cargo ships. Norwegian Cruise Line – curiously based in Miami – does not think that has to be. For its latest cruise ship, christened the Norwegian Joy, it is building a world’s first – a race track. Designed by Scuderia Ferrari, no less. Located on the top deck of the ship, the track may feature electric go-karts instead of supercars, but the same level of skill is required to take corners and speed past opponents on the double-level circuit.

Up to 10 drivers can race at the same time, with access to the track being complimentary for passengers staying in certain classes. This is just one of the many adrenaline-packed activities – including open-air laser tag, simulator rides, multi-storey water slides and hovercraft bumper cars – built into the Norwegian Joy, a 3,840-passenger ship built specifically for the Chinese market (home-ported in Shanghai and Tianjin). Ready to burn some rubber? Let’s race!
