Below sea level with Duffy London’s Abyss Table
The UP table, Duffy London’s previous piece of wonderment, looked up to the sky for inspiration – resulting in a whimsical table held aloft by gold balloons. How does one top that? By heading in the opposite direction, down. Down to the deep, dark depths of the sea with the Abyss Table.
Beneath the horizontal surface, the ocean is anything but flat. Unimaginable volumes of water cover a landscape of ridges, mountains, plateaus and valleys as fascinating as anything on dry land. Inspired by thick sheets of glass that Christopher Duffy saw at his glass manufacturer’s factory and noting how the material darkened the more layers were added, the Abyss Table is a beautiful nautical cross-section. Layers of wood form the contours of land, while blue panes of glass become water, darkening from azure to deep indigo as depth increases.
The result is stunning – a three-dimensional topographical map of ocean geography. Good design functions; great designs stimulates; by that criteria the Abyss Table is a resounding great, a dramatic piece of furniture that will not fail to inspire conversation.
