Four auctions to watch in August 2016

August is a very quiet time for auctions houses; summer is in full swing and everyone is out in their classic cars zooming around sun-kissed hills and beaches. A select few auctions go on during this month, and though their number may be few, it does not make them less interesting. Here are our picks for the four most interesting auctions for August 2016.

1. August 23-24, Christie’s, New York

Auction: Living With Art
Highlight: A large patinated bronze figure of a panther on a tree trunk-form base

Christie’s New York turns its focus to objet d’art and statement pieces that will command the attention of anyone in a home. From vintage furniture to delicate porcelain, from intricate Persian rugs to gilded mirrors, there is much to see and admire here. Especially our favourite lot – a large patinated bronze figure of a panther on a tree trunk-form base, capturing the raw menace and power of the great cat that is expected to fetch between US$10,000-15,000 (RM40,500-60,700)

Living With Art

2. August 19, Bonhams, Hong Kong

Auction: Whisky
Highlight: Karuizawa Full Geisha Series

The amber elixir has the stage all to itself in Bonhams’ regular Whisky auctions. Collectors will not doubt be feasting on the opportunity to purchase Lot 167, a full set of the Karuizawa Geisha series that comprises 27 whiskies bottled between 1970 and 1999. Karuizawa is famed for being one of the finest expressions of Japanese whisky, and since it was closed in 2000, prized by connoisseurs. Expected to fetch some HKD1-1.3 million (RM520,000-670,000), the Karuizawa Geisha series leads other fascinating auctions on offer, including a set of Clubs flush and Hearts flush from Hanyu Ichiro’s Card series, and a vertical selection of The Macallan.

3. August 19-20, Sotheby’s, Monterey

Auction: RM Sotheby’s Monterey
Highlight: 1955 Jaguar D-Type

For more than 25 years, RM Sotheby’s flagship Monterey sale has been held during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance week, commanding the attention of the world’s most discerning collectors. Under the beautiful Californian sun in Monterey, some of the most important motorcars ever to come to public auction have been sold here. This year is no exception. Over two days, a 1955 Jaguar D-Type, a 1962 Ferrari 268 SP by Fantuzzi, a 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza Spider by Scaglietti and a 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider by Touring lead a collection of vintage stars that look set to shatter records again this year.
