The personalities of El Celler de Can Roca in The Macallan’s Edition No.2

Character statements

The brothers Roca are back, teaming up for the second time with The Macallan. After working with The Macallan last year in a series of charity dinners that paired dishes with a luminary range of The Macallan single cask malts, the boys behind El Celler de Can Roca were picked to create the second edition of The Macallan’s Edition series.

Named Edition No. 2, master whisky maker Bob Dalgarno worked with Joan, Josep and Jordi to create a whisky that is different and distinctive. Finished in seven types of cask from handpicked four Spanish bodegas, it allowed each of the four men to imbue their personality into the elixir.

Dalgarno chose European oak casks from Tevasa to define and shape the whisky, speaking to his ever-curious, patient and empathetic character. To this, Joan Roca (the chef) selected American and European oak casks from Diego Martin, contributing notes of green wood and toffee that reference his generous, reflective and passionate nature. Josep (the sommelier) went with European oak casks from Jose Miguel Martin, delivering hints of allspice and ginger for complexity, warmth and maturity, while youngest brother Jordi (the pastry chef) contributes a vivacious liveliness with notes of citrus and light vanilla coming from the American oak butts and puncheons from Vasyma.

Together, like Voltron, the combination yields a whisky that is exceedingly complex, wonderfully evocative yet undeniably refined, much like the food at El Celler de Roca.
