Inside the 2017 Oscars goodie bag

And the winner is…

There can only be one that goes home with the coveted golden statue at the 89th Academy Awards taking place this Sunday. But don’t feel too bad for the nominees in acting and directing who lose out. They are winners too, going home with a goodie bag worth about a million ringgit.

Handed out to the nominees in the four acting and single directing category, the Oscars goodie bag is a grand tradition started by niche marketing company Distinctive Assets 15 years ago. Unaffiliated and unsanctioned by the Academy itself, the gifts are the ultimate form of marketing to celebrities. Since its inception, the gift bags – which have included luxury vacations and cosmetic procedures – have only increased in extravagance, as brands vie for the attention of the rich and famous. As for why the bags are only limited to five categories, well that’s because Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Director are the most visible and prestigious categories; plus, they are single nominee categories whereas other categories could include multiple nominees.
