The art of japan
Penang’s first and only Ippudo restaurant, which recently debuted the Ippudo bar concept in Malaysia, became the venue to highlight the fine Japanese craftsmanship and style of Grand Seiko. The event showcased some of the most amazing facets of Grand Seiko, from the zaratsu finishing – reminiscent of the ancient polishing techniques applied on katana blades – to the incredible accuracy of the brand’s mechanical movements. Among the highlights were the limited edition Caliber 9S 20 th Anniversary piece, limited to 150 pieces and the 9S mechanical 20th Anniversary edition, limited to 350 pieces in a case and bracelet configuration of high-intensity titanium and ceramic. Taking prime position was the Grand Seiko Blue Ceramic Hi-Beat 36000 Special (limited to 350 pieces), a first for the GMT 9S86 calibre to be transposed in ceramic.
Guests were entertained by a live shakuhachi performance and indulged in Suntory beer paired with warm bowls of ramen, as well as drams of Chivas Regal matured in the rare Mizunara oak casks, a limited edition bottling intended mainly for the Japanese market. Its notes of white peach, toffee, vanilla dovetailed with a palate of floral and sweet spices, and a fruity finish.
