Mid-Autumn Festival is right around the corner. With dozens of restaurants and hotels offering a dizzying array of choices, we round up a range of solid choices to make your mooncake gifting fuss-free.

From giant 6.5-inch “super” mooncakes to gold-dipped edible art, this is pastry making at its finest.

1. Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur

A Touch of Gold

Orchids are the central theme of Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur’s mooncake offerings this year. Artist Samantha Cheah designs an elegant embroidered gift box using royal purple fabric, housing special edition golden mooncakes, Malaysian single origin chocolate mooncakes or even traditional baked variants. Available from now until September 13.

2. The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur

Champagne champions

Li Yen at The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur, celebrates this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival with a mixture of classic and champagne flavoured mooncakes. Prices for traditional flavours, such as white lotus paste or red bean paste, range from RM108 per box of four to RM128. The Moët & Chandon and Moët & Chandon Rose Imperial mini snow skin are priced at RM128 and RM168 respectively per box of eight. The new addition to this year’s line up is an intriguing cream cheese snow skin mooncake with port wine, available for RM144 per box of eight. Li Yen’s mooncakes are available from now until September 13.

3. Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur

The Power of Chocolate and Coffee

Chocolate and coffee flavoured mooncakes steal the show at Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur. Chocolate variants – mint chocolate and tiramisu paste – as well as coffee versions – illy coffee snow skin mooncake and the illy coffee snow skin mooncake with pumpkin seeds – are priced at RM 28 each. The hotel also offers traditional flavours, all available in a box of six priced at RM158 each. Available from now until September 13.

4. Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur

A Mid-Autumn Afternoon Tea

Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur opts for a different route this Mid-Autumn Festival, creating a seasonal afternoon tea menu from September 10-13. Enjoy oriental-themed delicacies liked pandan bird’s nest, smoked duck, chestnut, pumpkin and tao dumplings, as well as an array of assorted mooncakes at RM128 nett per person.


5. The St Regis Kuala Lumpur

Larger Than Life

307 golden shadow crystals Swarovski crystals enhances The St Regis Kuala Lumpur’s super mooncake trunk this year. Priced at RM380+, the 6.5-inch prosperity lotus seed mooncake with eight yolks makes for an impressive gift. If you prefer the traditional mooncake sizes, the hotel also offers the classic trunk that comes with four regular sized pastries for RM180+.

6. Hilton Kuala Lumpur

Fashion Forward

Upping the ante from last year’s fashion themed mooncakes, Hilton Kuala Lumpur partners with local designer Christy Ng to create a limited edition hibiscus adorned mooncake box. The rounded faux leather case is a nod to Malaysia’s national flower, available in crimson red or royal purple (RM168), comes with four mooncakes. A snow skin package (RM178) is also available, inclusive of the gift box. Available from now until September 13.


7. W Kuala Lumpur

All About That Style

Local fashion maven Melinda Looi teams up with W Kuala Lumpur to create a quirky mooncake set. Each set comes in a luminous translucent square pouch, a paper lantern, a little booklet with classic Mid-Autumn fables, four mooncakes of your choice and a matching opalescent tote bag. Priced at RM198 nett, this fashion-forward mooncake set is available from now until September 12.


8. Nobu Kuala Lumpur

Flavours of the East

Japanese flavours will jazz up your MId-Autumn Festival – miso yolk, wasabi yolk, green tea and black sesame, available in either traditional, Shanghai or snow skin-style mooncake. Opt for the signature set (RM148++) for flavours such as charcoal hojicha mooncake, green tea pure lotus paste, Shanghai red bean paste, and Shanghai black sesame. The premium set (RM168++) on the other hand, comes with green tea lotus paste, sakura mochi, and pandan paste with miso yolk, along with the Shanghai red bean paste. Available from now until September 12.
