Aptly named after one the Japanese god of wealth and fortune, Ebisu is all about the good stuff: Wagyu teppanyaki expertly grilled before your eyes, a commendable assortment of sashimi, and of course, an omakase menu that pushes all the right buttons. The best seats are at the sushi counter where executive chef Ricky Kamishi good-humouredly slices, dices, and takes charge of every course that makes its way to you.
“It’s like a game,” he smiles, as dishes such as tuna belly braised with dash and potatoes, autumn vegetables in a light tempura batter, and buttery salmon belly sushi with garlic sauce emerge one after the other. Ebisu – which opened in September at Pavilion Hotel Kuala Lumpur, managed by Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur, deserves additional praise for its beautiful clothbound menus, separate teppanyaki section, and delightfully refreshing yuzu sorbet.
