For Robin Ang, entrepreneurship is deeply rooted in the values and lessons he absorbed during his formative years. Growing up in Kuala Lumpur, his parents’ restaurant and bar was not just a family business but also a crucible of hard work, discipline and invaluable life lessons. “I grew up meeting lots of businesspeople who walked through our doors for drinks and networking,” Robin recalls. It was a great privilege to gain various industry experiences at such a young age, listening to industry makers brainstorming and making deals was inspirational and insightful.
Therefore Ang started small trading business at a tender age of 17. Grinding hours for school, his own business while still assisting the parent’s restaurant has taught him invaluable lessons in the value of hard work and innovation.
These early lessons in perseverance and adaptability shaped Ang’s fearless pursuit of business ventures. His first major success came in 2007 with Wall Tailor, a groundbreaking interior architecture firm that became a market leader in innovative wall solutions. The company’s signature WT Whiteboard Paint, which transforms ordinary walls into writable surfaces, attracted prestigious clients including Google, ISKL and many prestigious addresses.
Under Ang’s leadership, Wall Tailor expanded its offerings to include premium Italian decorative paints and magnetic wall solutions, serving a diverse clientele of private and international schools, corporate offices, and residential properties.
True entrepreneurial spirit has lead Ang to multiple passion ventures along his journey. In 2014, Ang supported his high school friend’s idea in creating an online marketplace that would simplify financial products for the average consumer. Drawing from his IT background, Ang recognised the opportunity to transform how people access financial information. “At that time, researching for home loans was difficult. Information on websites wasn’t digestible, and you had to visit banks, wade through brochures and fine print just to understand basic terms like Flexi or non-Flexi,” Ang recalls.
In 2017, they co-founded Finology, a fintech platform revolutionising financial services across Asia. Through their complementary strengths—Ang’s entrepreneurial drive and Lim’s product expertise—they created digital solutions that simplify loan and insurance services. “The trust and chemistry were there from the start,” Ang reflects. “We complement each other perfectly.”
Beyond his entrepreneurial ventures, Ang finds fulfilment in his role as a devoted father to his four daughters, imparting the enduring values of hard work, creativity and resilience that have defined his own journey. Central to his story is the unwavering support of his wife, Dianna Lee, whom he credits as a cornerstone of his success.
Together, they foster a family culture that celebrates togetherness and innovation. Weekends are cherished for their simplicity—bonding over lovingly prepared meals and whimsical entrepreneurial projects, such as lemonade stands, where his daughters reveal promising glimpses of their father’s enterprising spirit. “My family keeps me grounded,” he says. “They remind me that success isn’t just about business; it’s about creating a legacy that inspires others.”
Although work has always been a cornerstone of Ang’s life, golf provides him with balance and perspective. “Golf has helped me be more sociable, meeting people of all ages and walks of life. It’s a game that teaches resilience,” he shares. He views the sport as a metaphor for life. “The sport reflects my journey—a balance of physical tool, clear strategies and a calm mind to navigate challenges. Like in golf, you need to be agile and adaptive depending you are in the bunker, rough or fairway. It is not only how you start, it is also how well you finish.”
