The Omega Speedmaster is, famously, the watch that went to the moon. The new Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite (RM81,750) watches are, in a sense, coming from the opposite direction—they bring little slices of outer space to the Speedmaster instead.
Meteorites are rocks that originate from outer space and have fallen to the Earth’s surface. Their extraterrestrial origin lends a certain mystique and romance to their use, and for watches, they make infrequent but regular appearances as a dial material. In this usage, meteorite is particularly prized for its appearance, due to its unique structure—long stripes of its metallic makeup arranged in satisfying geometric shapes. There is a randomness to it, too, which means that no two dials will be exactly alike.
The Moonphase Meteorite is the latest Speedmaster to benefit from a meteorite dial. It is available in two colour options. The first is classically monochrome, with a black PVD coated meteorite dial on black PVD coated base, paired with a black ceramic bezel and white hands and markers along with black subdials. The second has a slightly lighter touch, featuring a galvanic grey coated meteorite dial on a blue PVD coated base, along with blue ceramic bezel and blue hands, markers and subdials. Both have stainless steel cases, 43mm in diameter.

Under the hood awaits something brand new. The manual-winding Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9914. Its moonphase indicator is of a style that has never previously been on a Speedmaster; found at six o’clock, it has two cabochon moons that are fittingly crafted out of lunar meteorite. The indicator’s backdrop is that of a starry sky. In a nod to its own history, the position of the stars is a specific one—how they would have appeared from Bienne in Switzerland, where Omega is headquartered, on the night that Apollo 11 reached the moon in 1969.

In Omega’s typical fashion, the movement is METAS certified and magnetic resistant to 15,000 gauss. The watch is equipped with a stainless steel bracelet, one that sports the brand’s patented adjustment system.
