The Oppo Find N5 is making waves on the foldable device scene. Building on the success of models like its flagship-defining Find N3 foldable device from two years ago and the Hasselblad-powered Find X8 Pro, Oppo is pushing the boundaries of what is possible with foldable devices in terms of design and features. But will this time be any different? Can the Find N5 find its footing in an increasingly crowded market?
A Design That Defies Convention
View how slim the Find N5 is when held in hand
Measuring at just 8.93mm when folded and a whisper-thin 4.21mm unfolded, the Find N5 fits easily in your pocket. Thanks to its titanium alloy hinge, the Find N5 is durable enough to withstand bumps as well as repeated opening and closing of its screen. Upon first receiving the phone, I liked how it snaps open with satisfying resistance.
Most foldables have a noticeable crease running down the centre, but the Find N5 nearly erases it. When I tried looking for the crease, it was visible only as a fleeting shadow under harsh light. Folded, it slips into a pocket as effortlessly as a pen or small notebook. I received the Cosmic Black variant of the device but, to be honest, the marble-inspired finish of Misty White looks better.
Brilliant Displays
It’s worth noting that the 6.62in cover display is sharp, vibrant, and nearly indistinguishable from a flagship slab phone. It offers a 20.7:9 aspect ratio, which makes it feel like you are using a regular smartphone without any compromises. When unfolded, the 8.12in inner screen is almost like a small tablet—though the Find N5 trumps it in portability, with a near-square canvas that is ideal for multitasking between different apps or streaming videos.
Hasselblad-Tuned Optics
Although the Find N5’s cameras take a slight step back from the Find X8 Pro—you get three cameras instead of the latter’s four—they are still a formidable trio. You get a 50MP main sensor that takes excellent photos under most conditions. Paired with a 3x telephoto lens, the Find N5 adds versatility to your photography and even has a 60x zoom that is enhanced by AI. The 8MP ultrawide camera, however, feels outclassed and pales in comparison with the other two cameras. Furthermore, I miss having the tactile camera button from Oppo’s recent Find X8 Pro that would have been appreciated for quick snaps.
All-Day Power
Foldable devices typically don’t have big batteries, but the Find N5’s 5,600mAh battery bucks that trend. It powers through a day of 4K filming, navigation, and endless scrolling with ease. Even after a marathon session of using the device throughout the Find N5’s launch event in Singapore, it barely broke a sweat. Even when running low on juice, I’m not too concerned as its 80W wired fast charging feature gets it back to full power it in under an hour.
The Verdict
The Oppo Find N5 clearly establishes itself as the current head of the pack in the foldable smartphone market. With powerful hardware, a big battery, durable titanium hinge, and near-invisible crease, there certainly is a lot to like about it. Although camera enthusiasts might yearn for the X8 Pro’s better array of cameras, this is by no means a deal breaker. It goes without saying that those seeking the apex of innovation will find it in the new Find N5.
