Bvlgari Polychroma Spotlights The Art Of Multicolour High Jewellery

Colourful rare gems that tell stories of Rome’s glory.

Vivid colour juxtapositions, avant-garde contours, and haloed beauty—this is Polychroma, Bvlgari’s latest expression in high jewellery. The collection takes its name from the Greek words ‘poly’ (multitude) and ‘chroma’ (colours), with an added homage to Rome’s historical prominence. Each piece represents a conceptual medium where colour conveys storytelling, movement illustrates dimension, and rare gems command attention.

The magnificent collection was introduced in a one-of-a-kind spectacle at the ancient Greek Theatre of Taormina, Sicily, showcasing 600 pieces in total, 250 of which were unveiled for the first time. Among them, 60 were deemed ‘millionaire products’, marking Bvlgari’s most extensive presentation to date. The reveal unfolded through a theatrical three-act performance inspired by Greek tragedy.

Comprising 56 distinct gemstones, Polychroma demonstrates Bvlgari’s mastery of dimensionality through a mix of cuts and shapes. From sharp faceted edges to polished cabochons and buff-top finishes, the collection’s geometry lends intricacy to both brand-new pieces and adaptations of familiar classics. Spotlighting the new releases are five arresting pieces from the Gallery of Wonders, each exemplifying the highest calibre of creativity and craftsmanship. Two of these debuted on the red carpet at the Met Gala in New York earlier this May, ahead of the official showcase in Taormina.

The Cosmic Vault, worn by Anne Hathaway, recalls the celestial grandeur and architectural feats of Rome. Jewellery creative director Lucia Silvestri was inspired by the dome structures seen across Rome’s skyline, noting their recurring presence throughout her travels. Dominating this necklace is a 123.35-carat Sri Lankan sugarloaf sapphire, prized for its rich, royal blue hue, and reminiscent of Elizabeth Taylor’s famed 66-carat gem. The sugarloaf cut provides a soft, velvety surface and is paired with a flexible base crafted from more than 200 alternating elements, alongside 331 buff-top blue sapphires and 13 diamond drops.

Elsewhere on the red carpet, Priyanka Chopra Jonas donned the 241-carat Magnus Emerald necklace. One of the rarest ever uncovered from Colombia’s mines, its immense carat weight, liquid-like lucidity, and green lustre make it the largest emerald ever mounted by Bvlgari. The composition is built around three design codes: a diamond rivière framing the back; an assertive architectural front; and a sinuous silhouette echoing archival designs from the 1970s.

The Celestial Mosaic necklace finds its muse in Jericho’s 18th-century Tree of Life mosaic. Its centrepiece—a 131.21-carat Tajikistan spinel, the fourth largest on Earth and perhaps the most exquisite—radiates a chromatic spectrum, flowing from the deep turquoise of a rare tourmaline to the colourful interplay of buff-top emeralds, onyx, and diamonds. Influenced by Mughal art, the piece is composed of nearly 200 elements, brought to life by the hands of two master goldsmiths.

Equally picturesque is the Polychromatic Bloom necklace—“one of Polychroma’s emblems,” as Silvestri calls it. Set in rose gold, the piece features three cabochons sourced from around the globe: a 106.36-carat rubellite from Mozambique, a 55.52-carat peridot from Pakistan, and a 55.11-carat tanzanite from Tanzania. Despite its complexity, with more than 500 components, the necklace remains fluid and lightweight against the skin.

The final creation presents an architectural reinterpretation of the Trombino ring, rendered in platinum with a broad, flared band that tapers toward the base. Crowned with a 45.07-carat Asscher-cut fancy vivid yellow diamond—a rare marvel that surfaces only once every four to five years, representing just one in eight million—the Essence of Yellow ring adopts this special cut to amplify the gem’s natural intensity. Completing this piece are 42 step-cut diamonds and pavé-set stones.
