One Percent Fitness Signature aims to redefine the contemporary gym. It’s clear at first glance: an unconventional light grey colour scheme is dominant throughout its 278 sq m space, which distinguishes it from the black tones of other fitness centres. Additionally, the precision of its architectural choices mirrors the brand’s values of self-regulation and persistence. Conceived by the Penang-based interior design firm, Dare Solution, and located in Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya, the gym is a well-equipped wonder of the industrial aesthetic that begs to be photographed.
Its development process was incredibly efficient, as it opened in July with only two weeks of design and five weeks of construction. Professional and versatile to a fault, Dare Solution has a knack for capturing the essence of a project in every nut and bolt. Notably, the multiple award-winning interior design firm from Penang was sought after to work on Sood by Chef Ton over other firms from Singapore and Thailand, and expertly integrated the life of high-end bars in Bangkok with the 1870s heritage houses characteristic of the island. Dare Solution also lent its keen eye to Lyf Georgetown Penang by The Ascott Limited and upcoming projects such as Harris Hotel & Conventions Sunshine Penang and the Ascott Residences Sales Gallery in Penang.
The spirit of discipline is found in the gym’s geometric sculpted forms, which extend to tailor-made furniture, lights, and even weights, so that exercise feels like an extension of the environment. “Rather than opting for ready-made fixtures, we customised the stainless-steel pendant lights and even sourced raw materials, such as aluminium, to craft bespoke furniture. This approach not only showcases the beauty of the materials but also ensures a cohesive colour scheme and design language,” said Darren Tang, managing director of Dare Solution. Borrowing from the design language of a famous Japanese gym, splashes of colour—here, a powerful red—act as anchors against a muted palette, carefully calculated to energise goers.
Highlights include a bespoke counter-height table, with a base crafted using aluminium extrusion profiles and a round tempered glass surface, as well as two contrasting-toned bathrooms. Opaque black tiles and stark white grooves size up against warmly lit shades of light brown, the latter designed to invite relaxation after a strenuous workout. Equipped with Dyson hand dryers, it’s a breather for the eyes and body in one.
