a night in the clouds
The choice of hosting a dinner for a very special whisky – The Singleton of Glen Ord 41 Year Old – in Resorts World Genting’s LTITUDE proved to be quite inspired. The cool, cloudy weather certainly evoked the windswept, rugged nature of Scotland, but the room itself – resembling an intrepid Victorian explorer’s study, complete with fireplace – is exactly the sort of place a great whisky should be enjoyed.
Introducing the Forgotten Drop Series, The Singleton of Glen Ord 41 Year Old represents an exceptional, though tiny, fraction of casks. Re-discovered from extremely rare, sometimes forgotten, casks, whiskies in this precious series are rich, balanced and utterly unique. Crisp and fresh – dispensing flavours of apples, toffee, cinnamon, citrus and even chempedak – the 41 Year Old is a beautiful whisky indeed. Brand ambassador Erwin Trykowski, who resembles Channing Tatum after a few drams, calls it ‘ripe and indulgently rich.’ Bottled at cask strength, our word to describe it is ‘velvety’. Pairing it with a forkful of sirloin steak, pomme puree, onion confit and bone marrow reveals even more complex facets – this is very potent weapon in The Singleton’s arsenal indeed.
Only 600 bottles of The Singleton Glen Ord 41 Year Old were made available worldwide, of which 24 (RM15,193 per bottle) were allocated to Malaysia (well, 23 now that the dinner was over). That’s a large fraction, and testament to the brand’s strength here – The Singleton remains one of the best-selling single malt brands in Malaysia. Which is why it also launched the 18 Year Old Cask Strength at the dinner – a sharper and spikier bottling to celebrate the distillery’s 180th anniversary. The 18 Year Old was great, pairing very well with an appetiser of scallop and a first course of sea bass, but the 41 Year Old was amazing. We still dream about it. A perfect venue for a perfect whisky.
