Chinese Luxury Automotive Brand Hongqi Arrives In Malaysia Following An MOU With Quill Group Of Companies
The announcement heralds what will be an impressive sight of the HS9, H9 and the Guoya on Malaysian roads.
Hongqi automobiles, which used to be the exclusive reserve of high-ranking government officials in China—including Chairman Mao—will soon be available for purchase by Malaysian owners. The car brand, owned and operated by First Automotive Works (FAW) Group, is the oldest Chinese passenger car brand. Its name translates into ‘red banner’, and its impending Malaysian entry will add an ultra-luxury alternative in the SUV and luxury sedan categories.

Late last month, at the Wanda Vista Hotel located in the city of Changchun, where FAW is headquartered, Quill Group of Companies entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with FAW Group. The MOU sees Quill Group becoming FAW’s strategic partner and distributor for Hongqi in Malaysia, spearheading importation of vehicles into the local market, with an event horizon slated before the end of this year.

“We are immensely proud to be entrusted with introducing Hongqi to Malaysia,” said Dato’ (Dr) Jennifer Low, Executive Chairman of Quill Group, in a release. “It is a uniquely special brand with a storied legacy, favoured by leaders and recognised globally for its uncompromising quality. With Malaysia’s robust bilateral relationship with China established since 1974, it is fitting that we are chosen as one of the premier right-hand drive markets for Hongqi’s strategic expansion.”

“Leveraging Quill Group’s extensive corporate expertise and commitment to excellence, we will bolster consumer confidence through comprehensive marketing programmes, uncompromising full-service after-sales support, and seamless parts availability,” Low said. “Our goal is to ensure a highly successful and prestigious entry for Hongqi, catering specifically to the expanding demand for premium and ultra-luxury vehicles.”

The FAW Group currently exports Hongqi vehicles to over 87 countries and regions around the world, which include various parts of Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Among some of its current models in the stable are: the dual-motor E-HS9 full-sized ultra-luxury electric SUV, and the Guoya ultra-luxury executive sedan. The latter makes its presence felt with a 5.35-metre length and nearly two-metre width, boasting a 32-speaker sound system, as well as design elements inspired by the Forbidden City, such as Palace Lantern-styled taillights and a front fascia which reflects an ancient philosophy of universal harmony in which the Sky meets the Earth.
