The Track-Oriented Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Coupes Offer The Best Of The Old And The New
The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Pro 4Matic+ Coupé is a two-door with an old-school V8, while the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupé is based on record-breaking technology.
Capitalising on the unexpected return of Formula 1 to Malaysia last October, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia unveiled two of its most performance-oriented offerings in the days leading up to the race weekend. The launch took place at KLCC Plaza and leaned into the excitement with plenty of Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team paraphernalia, including race cars.
The more traditional offering is the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Pro 4MATIC+ Coupé (RM2,088,888). By “traditional”, we of course mean the 4.0-litre biturbo V8 under the bonnet. This track-focused version of Mercedes-Benz‘s second-generation performance coupé benefits from enhanced cooling and improved aerodynamics. Its engine control unit has been recalibrated to extract an additional 27bhp, bringing total output to 603bhp and 850Nm of torque.
Power is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed transmission and advanced all-wheel-drive system, enabling a 0-100km/hr sprint in just 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 317km/hr. Active roll stabilisation, rear-axle steering, and active aerodynamic elements further enhance its performance credentials.
For enthusiasts seeking something even more exclusive, there’s the Motorsport Collector’s Edition (RM2,588,888), limited to just 200 units worldwide. Finished in striking Obsidian Black and adorned with the Mercedes-Benz Star Pattern, the special edition also features Petronas-green accents both inside and out, including the brake callipers, wheel detailing, and contrast stitching.
Representing the more modern side of AMG performance is the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupé (RM1,290,000). Effectively the road-going version of the Concept GT XX, the electric super sedan follows a concept that shattered multiple long-distance EV performance records, including the greatest distance ever covered by an electric vehicle within 24 hours.
Styled with an aggressive fastback silhouette and a distinctive illuminated AMG-specific grille, the GT XX 4-Door Coupé is powered by three advanced axial-flux motors producing a combined 1,153bhp. The result is a blistering 0-100km/hr time of just 2.4 seconds.
Underpinning the car is a revolutionary Formula 1-inspired battery system featuring directly cooled cylindrical cells, developed jointly by Mercedes-AMG engineers in Affalterbach and the company’s High Performance Powertrains facility in Brixworth, England. This battery technology is key to delivering its remarkable and repeatable performance.
AMG Race Engineer, the brand’s advanced in-house operating system, seamlessly integrates the vehicle’s software and hardware. The latter includes features such as semi-active anti-roll technology, front and rear multi-link suspension, and rear-wheel steering, all working together to maximise performance and driver engagement.
AMG hasn’t completely removed the human element, however. Three rotary controls allow drivers to fine-tune throttle response, cornering characteristics, and traction control settings, helping them shave precious milliseconds off every lap.
