One of the most admired hotels in Zurich, Baur au Lac typifies the quiet, good taste of this affluent city. Sitting within its own landscaped park, the hotel faces the up-scale designer shops of the Bahnhofstrasse on one side while the other overlooks Lake Zurich and the snow-capped Alps beyond. Remaining a family owned hotel since its opening in 1844, Baur au Lac is the only hotel in Zurich that has permission to meet guests at the luggage carousel in the airport.
All throughout Christmas, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s, the hotel celebrates the onset of winter with a range of festivities. Famously, this will be the third year in a row hotel staff recreate an entire log cabin in the heart of Zurich. From this toasty venue, enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with whole roast turkey, red cabbage, glazed chestnuts and Baur au Lac stuffing at CHF300. Then on November 23 at six o’clock sharp, attend the lighting of Zurich’s tallest Christmas tree. Hotel guests and local residents are invited to share mulled wine and biscuits while singers Levin Deger and Nyssina entertain with festive songs.
The following day, make your way to Le Hall and savour traditional afternoon tea with fine cut sandwiches, scones and clotted cream, and Swiss pastries. Prices start from CHF69 per person to CHF112 per person, with the latter including a glass of Grand Cuvee champagne. Stay also for the 3-course Fete de Noel dinner prepared by executive chef Maurice Marro, priced at CHF185 per person, inclusive of red and white wines.
The highlight will of course be the Chateau au Lac, the traditional log cabin that will also serve a 3-course meal featuring raclette with cheese from Bagnes A Discretion, fondue Chinoise, and a selection of Swiss cold-cut with farmhouse butter and bread. This menu starts at CHF115 per person. Or you may opt for the luxurious Chef Laurent Eperon’s Christmas menu at CHF530 with wine pairing. Dine on duck liver, seabass from Noirmoutier and Swiss veal.
Last but not least, save some space for the New Year’s Eve dinner party at Le Petit Palais and Les Salons. Priced at CHF490 including a champagne aperitif, your meal will consist of tuna tartare, lobster mousseline, guinea fowl velout with armagnac.
