Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Tang Yong Chew On Destination Creation, Development With Respect, And Co-Existing With Mother Nature
For the transformative Wyndham Semporna project, Goldstone Holdings was recognised with the SHAREDA 2026 Excellence Award for Eco-Coastal Commercial Development Concept.
Wyndham Semporna Resort, which aims to open in 2026, is the most ambitious oceanfront development in Sabah, with 188 units of overwater villas in what has been perennially rated to offer some of the best diving sites in the world with five-star rated biodiversity. With biophilic designs opening to sea-fronting panoramas, Wyndham Semporna Resort is poised to become Goldstone Holdings’ effort in showcasing Sabah’s—and, indeed, Semporna’s—natural beauty as a world-class destination.
As for Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Tang Yong Chew, executive chairman of Goldstone, his path is also guided by inspirational individuals who have improved humanity though creativity, compassion, and those who keep nature at the heart of their purpose: Sir David Attenborough for his dedication to awakening our consciousness of the natural world; and Isamu Noguchi, whose work unites art, space, and nature in a seamless expression. “Each of them reminds me that lasting achievement is not only about what we build, but also how respectfully we co-exist with the planet.”

“It’s a great privilege to be part of a journey that not only builds remarkable destinations but also uplifts the city and the community around them. What gives the greatest satisfaction is seeing how thoughtful development can elevate a place without taking away from its natural beauty.
“Our projects are designed to grow in harmony with their surroundings, to protect what makes each location special, and to ensure that progress never comes at the cost of the environment. Creating spaces where people feel connected to nature is both a responsibility and a source of deep fulfilment.
“Our development philosophy is simple: to develop with respect. Every feature is designed with the long-term protection of the environment in mind. We employ energy-efficient designs to reduce reliance on air conditioning through a two-layered roof system, creating an air gap to naturally lower heat transfer, minimising energy use, and protecting the surrounding ecosystem.
“The sea teaches us that no matter how far cities advance, we remain part of a larger natural system that deserves respect and protection.”
“Aluminium formwork is used for repetitive construction, which reduces material waste and supports a cleaner building process. Materials are also carefully chosen to resist saltwater corrosion, reducing the need for replacement, while our biophilic design of an open layout reduces artificial energy needs, encouraging natural air flow and light, and weaving the natural landscape and elements through the built spaces for guests to sync with nature’s rhythms.
“Rather than unplugging, I try to live in balance. I find calm in nature, even during work. When the mind, body, and environment are in harmony, there is no need to escape. Nature restores focus and keeps me grounded.

“The ocean reminds me of the vastness and fragility of nature. Standing before it is a humbling experience that brings perspective and peace. The sea teaches us that no matter how far cities advance, we remain part of a larger natural system that deserves respect and protection. Building by the water carries a great responsibility—to ensure that what we create enhances the landscape rather than disturbs it. For me, the ocean is a constant reminder that true progress is achieved only when we safeguard the beauty that already exists.”
