Elvis Presley’s Cousin Donna Presley On The King’s Legacy Of Controversy During Her First Visit To Malaysia
In an exclusive interview with Robb Report Malaysia, Elvis Presley's cousin Donna Presley reveals untold stories from Graceland, challenges decades-old claims about the King of Rock 'n' Roll, and shares her mission to preserve his legacy.
Nearly half a century after Elvis Presley’s death, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll remains as much a subject of controversy as he is a cultural phenomenon. Now, his cousin Donna Presley is determined to set the record straight, offering an intimate perspective on the man behind the music.
Speaking exclusively to Robb Report Malaysia during her first visit to Asia earlier this year, the 76-year-old, who spent much of her youth at Graceland, says the public’s understanding of Elvis has been shaped by decades of sensationalism.

“I’m not trying to make Elvis out to be something that he wasn’t, a saint, a perfect person. He wasn’t. But I do know the life that he lived,” she says at an interview at The Writer’s Room in The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur prior to her meet-and-greet.
Among the misconceptions she is most passionate about addressing are claims surrounding his prescription medication use. Presley maintains that Elvis suffered from several debilitating medical conditions, including glaucoma, a twisted colon and insomnia, which required ongoing treatment.
“Did he take too much? Sometimes he did, absolutely,” she acknowledges, while arguing that his dependence on prescribed medication should not define his life or character. Beyond the controversies, Presley remembers a remarkably different Elvis: a devoted family man who valued loyalty, humility and the company of those who knew him before fame.

She recalls a conversation shortly before her high-school graduation when Elvis offered four principles for success: faith in God, faith in oneself, hard work, and never allowing others to diminish one’s dreams.
“Never let anyone tell you that you cannot accomplish your dreams because I’m living proof that you can,” The King had told her during one of her frequent stays at Graceland. It is advice she continues to share with audiences worldwide.
Her Malaysian visit also marks a new chapter in preserving the Presley legacy. Through a series of documentary-led conversations, she hopes to encourage audiences to explore Elvis’s upbringing, family values and personal struggles beyond the familiar mythology.

Her mission extends beyond storytelling. Following a visit to Seeds of Hope, a Malaysian charitable organisation, Presley is working towards establishing a music and learning space for underprivileged children, drawing upon her role as advisory board chairman of the Mississippi Music Foundation.
For Presley, preserving her cousin’s legacy is ultimately less about defending an icon than perpetuating the values he represented.
“It’s not just a tribute, it’s a way of life,” she says.
And 49 years after his passing, that may be the most enduring measure of Elvis Presley’s extraordinary influence.
