There’s a certain appeal that comes with being tall, dark and mysterious, as those who’ve encountered Bruichladdich’s limited edition Black Art series might agree. The type, age and origins of the casks that go into creating each Black Art expression have never been divulged, giving birth to a canon of enigmatic, thought-provoking whiskies. “We’re always experimenting,” Bruichladdich’s brand ambassador, Murray Campbell, affirms. “The reason we’re releasing Black Arts is because we love it ourselves, and we want whisky fans to try it as well.”

Edition 05.1 – the newest Black Art expression to emerge from the Rhinns of the isle of Islay, with a cask strength of 48.4 percent – is Adam Hannett’s first Black Art creation as Head Distiller. This 1992 vintage stands entirely independent of the blueprint of Hannett’s legendary predecessor, Jim McEwan, with a decadent mouthfeel that carries hints of plum, tobacco, cherry, and spicy cinnamon. Only 12,000 individually numbered bottles are available (price upon application), so you might have to turn to some dark magic of your own to experience the mind-blowing alchemy behind Bruichladdich’s bold, rebellious unpeated single malt.
