The Alain Roux Culinary School Reveals A New Side Of London
Guests can now explore the home of the legendary chef and restaurateur, Michel Roux, OBE.
There’s a comforting charm to London, with its iconic landmarks and enchanting landscapes often portrayed in storybooks and films. But savvy travellers know that the best discoveries usually lie off the beaten track. Sometimes, they’re tucked away in a remote kitchen helmed by chef Alain Roux of The Waterside Inn—a restaurant that has retained three Michelin stars for 40 years.
Set on the same grounds as this esteemed fine-dining legacy is the Alain Roux Culinary School, an establishment inspired by Alain’s father, the late Michel Roux, OBE. Known as the godfather of fine dining in the United Kingdom, he believed that “knowledge means nothing unless it’s passed on to others”, according to Alain.
Here, guests of all ages and skill levels can join the revered chef, working hand in hand to craft a complete three-course menu or uncover the secrets behind the restaurant’s signature dishes—such as the warm raspberry soufflé. “My father used to cook these for the Rothschild family, and they have appeared on our menus from the beginning. It’s a great family classic,” Alain explains. “Depending on the season, our favourites are raspberry or golden plums. Our soufflé is like a warm, soft cloud and needs to be eaten to be believed. Whenever I make this dish, I’m reminded of my father.”
Where the culinary school now stands was once Michel’s home. “Created in the aftermath of my father’s passing in March 2020, I could think of no better way to honour his legacy—and to benefit our guests and staff—than to turn his home into a culinary school,” Alain says.
Michel had many passions. His love for food may have brought him acclaim, but he also found joy in writing. “His large living room is now the Michel Roux Library. It houses his extensive collection of culinary works, including many rare, antique cookery books, as well as his own 12 titles, which have been published in at least 12 different languages,” Alain shares. “Besides my father’s priceless collection, we have a broad, constantly growing selection featuring international and many newer titles. It’s a unique resource for our colleagues, patrons, staff and trainees.”
Apart from cooking lessons and a grand library, guests can happily spend a day or two exploring the estate. “It’s an expansive operation, with 11 luxuriously appointed suites, private dining facilities, culinary gardens and even an electric launch allowing our guests to explore the river during spring and summer months,” Alain adds.
Beyond the doors, take in the natural beauty of the village riverside setting and the stunning willow tree that shades the terrace. “The views of the river from the restaurant are without equal in the area; we do not need pictures on the walls,” the chef enthuses. “It’s such a unique, unspoilt and tranquil corner of the English countryside.”
In a city so familiar to the world, this is the kind of place that proves there’s always more waiting to be discovered.
