David Bowie’s fabulous art collection goes on sale in November

This November, David Bowie’s private collection of artwork will go to auction through Sotheby’s London. Leading up to the three-part sale, which will take place November 10 and 11, about 30 select items in the Bowie/Collector assemblage (which includes around 400 items) will first be put on display at Sotheby’s New Bond Street galleries in London, followed by additional exhibitions will follow in Los Angeles, New York, and Hong Kong.

Bowie – an iconic musical artist with an unparalleled talent for embracing and exploring the world’s oddities – had an eye for the extraordinary, a skill that shines through his art selections. Highlights include a 1960s Italian-made record player, a vivid canvas piece by Jean-Michel Basquiat, a captivating spin painting from Damien Hirst, a 1947 watercolor by Graham Sutherland, dadaist creations from Marcel Duchamp, and more. Basquiat’s Air Power canvas work from 1984 is among the most highly valued of the collection at about $4.6 million. A great fan of the American artist’s frenetic, neo-Expressionist style, Bowie once wrote that Basquiat’s work “relates to rock in ways that very few other visual artists get near.”
