Mandarin Oriental Launches Its Second Property In Malaysia At The Desaru Coast
Discover all of the details of the resort’s upcoming multi-phase renovation.
The day has finally come for Malaysia to welcome Mandarin Oriental’s second hotel after the debut of Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur 28 years ago. With the addition of Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast, the hotel group begins a new phase, establishing this property as its first resort in Southeast Asia.
Previously known as The Sirēya Desaru Coast, the takeover comes at a time when the group is expanding its portfolio in some of the world’s most inspiring destinations, creating experiences that leave a lasting impression on guests. “It’s only natural that this new chapter unfolds here in the beautiful state of Johor—original for its authenticity, cultural depth, and the very rare connection to nature,” said Laurent Kleitman, group chief executive of Mandarin Oriental. “It is a destination that remains genuinely unspoilt, but also increasingly dynamic and benefitting from rising tourism activity.”

Spread across 128ac of ancient rainforest and 1.5km of beachfront, the resort houses 44 suites, each with its own private plunge pool, and one exclusive four-bedroom pool villa. At the spa, guests can admire the majestic 300-year-old banyan tree and indulge in two Malaysian-inspired signature spa menus, alongside Augustinus Bader’s science-led facial rituals. Alternatively, relax at the resort’s 56m infinity pool with sweeping ocean views, or join a guided nature walk with opportunities to spot the resident dusky monkeys. Other activities, such as tennis, padel, cycling, and Silat Melayu—a revered Malaysian martial art—are also available.
In the meantime, refurbishment plans will shortly be underway, progressing in stages throughout the year. This will include a revamp of the lobby, beach club, and suites. “The upcoming enhancement of the beach club will be the first phase in progress. Completion is expected by the end of August,” shares Christian Gerart, general manager of Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast. “It will feature a French Riviera-inspired concept rather than what we have now.” Currently, Ember Beach Club offers an Asian-style barbecue.
Work on the suites will begin at the start of April. “The renovation will start with two mock-up rooms, followed by a staggered rollout plan through to the end of the year,” Gerart adds. “The rooms will be almost completely transformed.” Proposed initiatives of the resort’s wellness offerings will also welcome visiting practitioners from around the world to provide bespoke treatments and specialised therapies.
Beyond the resort, Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast will be introducing a collection of branded residences as well. Kleitman states: “These homes will extend the Mandarin Oriental lifestyle to future owners who wish to be part of the destination year-round, while contributing significantly to the local vibrancy and awareness of Desaru Coast.”
