Marriott Bonvoy’s Langkawi Resorts Are Redefining Local Luxury And Relaxation

Langkawi is home to some of the most scenic beaches and breathtaking mountainous views our nation has to offer. Even its name, believed to be derived from ‘helang’ (the many eagles easily spotted in the sky) and ‘kawi’ (a reddish stone found across the island), speaks to its rich ecological landscape. The tropical archipelago is a hotspot for many. And on a rainy week in the middle of July, we got to experience a certain type of local luxury only Malaysia could provide, courtesy of Marriott Bonvoy resorts.

A Familiar Sensation

One quick glance at the sweeping mountains and clear blue seas that stretch across the island is enough to remind us that we’re no longer in the city. With only four days in Langkawi, the idea of exploring the island across four Marriott Bonvoy resorts seemed daunting. But before we can linger on this thought, we are ushered through the doors of the Westin Langkawi Spa & Resort, the first stop on the island.

Known for its signature wellness philosophy, the resort embodies an ethos of Sleep Well, Eat Well, and Move Well, offering curated experiences that encourage guests to recharge during their stay. Located along a private beach on the southeastern tip of Langkawi, away from the busy tourist spots and heavy traffic, it exudes an intimate ambience. Its never-ending list of amenities, including an award-winning spa, private beaches, and tantalising food, makes it the perfect place for uninterrupted relaxation.

After enjoying a decadent high tea assortment at the Breeze Lounge, we are transported to the Heavenly Spa Langkawi, where a much-needed foot massage awaits. Ranked sixth among the Top 10 Best Hotel Spas in Malaysia, the spa offers a long list of available treatments, catering to different needs and preferences. For our stay, a personalised foot massage was prepared for us, which included a tea foot soak and a salt scrub.

The monsoon season meant that many plans were cancelled or cut short, including kayaking in the ocean, while a beachside yoga session moved indoors. We instead took the opportunity to take in the breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea the resort had to offer, the sunlight bouncing off its emerald-blue hues.

Quiet Luxury, Right At Your Doorstep

Next on the agenda was The St. Regis Langkawi. We are immediately greeted by its bespoke butler service. They grab our bags and place them into our respective rooms, and, before we know it, we are standing in the grandiose lobby, the resort’s signature cocktail in hand. With origins dating back to 1934, when bartender Fernand Peiot perfected the vodka-tomato juice beverage at the St. Regis New York, its iconic Bloody Mary ritual served as the perfect introduction to the luxury establishment. As always, every St. Regis property introduces its own unique twist to the cocktail, with the resort’s interpretation taking shape in the Lang Mary—infused with local flavours of pandan, tamarind and lemongrass.

Its high-rise ceilings, arches, and mashrabiya-inspired screens are a sight to behold, seamlessly blending Western influences with Middle Eastern design language. What sets the St. Regis Langkawi apart is not just its architecture, but the centuries-old forestry that surrounds it. With Langkawi’s UNESCO Global Geopark as its backdrop, the luxury hotel boasts expansive private courtyards that lead into lush tropical gardens and beaches. A leisurely stroll through the estate is enough to bring new appreciation for its heritage trees, the sacred Baringin or banyan trees that have been preserved since the resort’s creation. We are led by its resident naturalist, Uncle Selva, on an early morning walk—a twice-weekly experience offering, and one of the highlights of our trip—to explore regional folklore, healing botanicals, and the history behind the local flora.

At night, we make our way to KayuPuti Restaurant, the resort’s fine-dining establishment, where its Flavor Odyssey course is served alongside panoramic views of the Andaman Sea. Dinner featured Asian-fusion dishes such as the Hokkaido Scallop Ceviche and Atlantic Cod masak lemak, with its signature Asam Pedas Risotto taking the spotlight.

Check-out the next morning was swift.  Just one text later, a butler is at our door, umbrella in hand, and ready to carry our bags as he escorts us through the courtyard doors.

A Vibrant Lifestyle

A 30-minute drive later, we arrive at the Aloft Langkawi Pantai Tengah. With an On Tour concept—a recurrent theme throughout the hotel that incorporates classic songs and music into experiences and interactive meals—the resort is a standout, modern-atmosphere offering in the landscape of the island.

Its open-air lobby brings us directly to the W XYZ Bar, where we explore some of the greatest hits in musical history with a personalised mocktail and cocktail workshop. Drinks such as Paw It Like It’s Hot serve as a nod to the hip hop classic, while the mocktail Smell Like Tea Spirit brings a refreshing twist to the grunge anthem. Afterwards, a batik-making workshop reminds us of the rich culture surrounding the island, engrossing us in the delicate craft under the tutelage of its resident batik artisan.

Dinner is served at Nook, where we are taken on an immersive culinary experience. Complemented by a live band, the night featured blindfolded tastings and dishes inspired by familiar songs and Langkawi mythos, with a memorable ‘message in a bottle’ keepsake gifted at the end—inviting us to return once our journey is over.

In Harmony With Nature

On the other end of the island sits The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi. Reminiscent of traditional Malay villages, the resort’s wooden architecture and lush landscapes leave a calming impression the moment we step in. The retreat is situated on a private bay, surrounded by a 10-million-year-old rainforest. Its suites feature an open-concept layout, beckoning us towards a custom-engraved coaster and rose petals intricately arranged on the bed. Just outside the balcony doors, dusky leaf monkeys swing about against the backdrop of pristine beaches.

While watching the crashing of waves from our balconies was mesmerising, nothing beats experiencing it firsthand aboard The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi’s Dayang Mastura Private Yacht. One of the last ventures of our trip, the four-hour sunset voyage proved to be one of the most memorable. The current is slightly rocky, but the mountainous views make up for it. Picture orange and pink hues seeping through the towering peaks of Gunung Machinchang and Gunung Raya, as you lie atop the deck, the sound of undulating tides and chirping birds murmuring in the background. Tourists and locals alike speed past on jet skis, while others parasail overhead. We make it a mission to spot every flying fish that jumps out of the ocean. As we return to shore, the setting sun illuminates us from behind—the perfect backdrop as we mark an end to our penultimate day.

On our last morning, we visit The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi’s Sea Cucumber Nursery, nestled in its Eco-Discovery Centre. There, an in-house marine biologist guides us through the life cycle and inner workings of the aforementioned invertebrates, and their significance in traditional minyak gamat ointments (made from sea cucumber extracts). Finally, we enjoy a lavish lunch at The Beach Grill, where its traditional Malay ‘Bubu’-inspired buildings, indigenous fish traps traditionally woven from pliant bamboo and rattan, and authentic Malaysian-fusion cuisine bring our trip full circle.

As our farewell lunch comes to an end, we opt out of the usual buggy ride and go for a quiet stroll back to the lobby. Despite only spending four days on the island, we’ve managed to experience four different perspectives through four Marriott Bonvoy hotels. We watch as butterflies dance among the blooming florals and snails glide across the stone-trodden paths, soaking in our final moments in Langkawi—where nature, relaxation, social lifestyle, and age-old traditions paint a picture of local luxury.
