Riva has always held a special place in the hearts of boat lovers. They might mention the Riva Ariston (the yacht choice of Bridget Bardot and Sean Connery) with the same reverence as a classic-car enthusiast speaks of the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Berlinetta. It is a name that evokes the good life. In the last decade, Riva has launched similarly inspiring, beautiful retro-looking boats, like the Iseo and the Aquariva Super. But the new Rivamare could be the next instant classic.
Straddling the terrain between big day boat and weekend cruiser, the 39-footer presents a retro profile, with sleek lines that taper back toward a tumblehome at the stern. Stainless grilles along the hull sides, a chrome-plated horn, and pinstriped mahogany on the bow are throwbacks to Riva’s glory days.
While aesthetically classic, Rivamare is thoroughly modern as well, with twin 400 hp Volvo engines that give it a top speed of 40 knots. A joystick control turns Rivamare into a nimble tiger in tight-quarter maneuvers, but the joystick can also be used instead of the steering wheel for offshore running. The helm station is an ensemble of touchpad screens set into a carbon-fibre backdrop. At the cockpit are forward seats for a captain, a first mate, and a friend, plus a mahogany table and C-shaped lounge just behind. One of its signature details is the wraparound windshield and the sunning area behind the cockpit.
The rear of the boat shows off Riva’s technical prowess. At anchor, two panels at the stern fold down to become a large swim platform (a feature typically found on much larger yachts) for more sunning or fast access to the water. When running, the boat buttons up nicely.
Rivermare’s chrome trim shows the Italian builder’s obsession with details. Instead of using plastic or even brushed-aluminium trim for the hatches on the bow, for instance, Riva uses chrome-plated alloy to frame the hatch – a small detail but one that reflects the elegance Riva demands and delivers.
The same attention to detail extends inside the cabin to a large galley, bathroom with separate shower, and an open forward area that converts into a queen-size berth. Two skylights provide plenty of natural light, though an electric blind offers cover from the ambient light at night.
All in all, Rivamare is an exciting new launch for Riva – one of its most noteworthy in years, successfully drawing on the past while reaching for the future.
