The CEO of Glycine, Stephan Lack, on the need to be extraordinary

Of future past

This year’s BaselWorld – now the globe’s largest timepiece and jewellery fair – represents the fair’s 99th year in existence, since its founding in 1917. A timepiece brand which has been present at the fair from as early as 1929 up till the present day is Glycine, famously known for being one of frontrunners in chronometre timepieces back in 1934 and also, one of horology’s earliest instances of self-winding watches three years before.

FEATGlycine_1Its avuncular CEO, Stephan Lack, says Glycine’s clear product identity and strong heritage has enabled the brand to continue its innovative streak. This year, it unveiled its Airman Airfighter, a pilot watch boasting three individual time zones and chronograph functions. Its GL754 automatic movement is encased within a 46mm steel case, the latter a recall of Glycine’s Airman models from the 50s, made large in a time when most other timepieces trended towards smaller cases. Sapphire glass with anti-reflective and scratch-resistant coating on both sides protects the watch, while the chronograph’s push-piece is situated on the left for ease of use with the thumb. A limited release of 101 Airfighters are made with an 18k gold bezel, priced at RM28,500 inclusive of GST.
