Romain Jerome, I choose you!
Independent Swiss watchmaker Romain Jerome is no stranger to pop culture, having flirted with Mario, Pacman and Tetris in previous editions alongside timepieces containing pieces of the Titanic, authentic moon dust and steel from the Statue of Liberty. So a Romain Jerome watch celebrating Pokémon should raise no eyebrows.
Released to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the franchise (with a price to match, US$20,000/RM83,700), the RJ x Pokémon watch features an exuberant Pikachu – the franchise’ mascot – beaming from the dial, surrounded by sand-blasted and satin-brushed bolt-shaped engravings that give it a skeletonised appearance. Housed in a 46mm titanium case, the watch is based on Romain Jerome’s Moon Invader star model. The strap comes in a choice of yellow or black vulcanised rubber (with leather being another option).
In another reference to Pokémon’s 20th anniversary, only 20 pieces of the RJ x Pokémon timepiece will be produced. And for those that live by the mantra ‘gotta catch them all!’, be relieved that Romain Jerome has chosen only Pikachu for the watch, and not the other 800-plus species of pokémon.
