During this time of year, the fleeting beauty of cherry blossoms is celebrated in Japan in an annual event known as the Hanami Festival. Here in InterContinental KL’s signature Japanese restaurant, Tatsu Japanese Cuisine, a Hanami Festival dining collection is designed to commemorate this centuries-old cultural tradition.
From now until 27 April, guests are invited to relish in the Hanami experience, co-crafted by Japanese guest Chef Kazuhiko Kojima and Tatsu’s Executive Chef Tommy Kuan. This special dining collection features Sakura themed à la carte options (from RM32 nett per serving), a bespoke omakase experience (RM358 nett), a Sakura wine dinner (RM458 nett), and a choice of two curated five-course set menus (RM238 nett), with an option to pair with sake or wine.
Those intrigued in the five-course set menus may select between the Hanagasumi set—which showcases a variety of seasonal spring ingredients, centred around a Grilled Sakura Sea Bream with White Miso—or the Hanafubuki set which stars a beef main course.
I opt for the latter, and the Hanafubuki menu kicks off with a Sakura Shrimp Salad before progressing to a Sakura Shinjo and Egg Tofu Clear Soup, infused with the rich umami flavours of Sakura flowers marinated in salt. This is followed by Simmered Bamboo Shoots enhanced with wakame (seaweed) and bonito flakes that is light yet satisfying. The highlight of the menu sees a Miso Stew of Beef Short Ribs with Asparagus that is carefully braised to perfection. The meal wraps up with a Sakura White Chocolate Mousse accompanied by a complementary Sakura mochi, a fitting treat to end the meal in true Hanami spirit.
