Set to become a bustling attraction in Old Phuket Town, Coolies Club, the sister establishment of The Slate, Phuket, has just opened its doors down the stretch of Soi Romanee—a well-preserved lane that once served as Phuket’s red-light district frequented by tin miners. Over the years, the street has shifted to a snapshot-worthy hotspot, thanks to its colonial structures, brilliant colours and embellished storefronts. Within this historical context, American architect Bill Bensley and owner of The Slate, Phuket, Krsytal Prakaikaew Na-Ranong—both previously collaborated on the hotel’s construction—have reunited to create an eastern-inspired restaurant and bar.
Credited as a champion of Phuket tourism, Krystal’s father, Wichit Na-Ranong, played a crucial role in moulding the island’s international reputation and investing in its growth. Krystal has been keeping this spirit alive by continuing her father’s legacy in boosting Phuket’s hospitality industry— fulfilling her lifelong dream with the creation of Coolies Club on Soi Romanee’s grandest Sino-Portuguese shophouse, built by Chinese workers in 1883. Valuing this historical relevance, Krystal enlisted Bensley to remodel the building into a haunt that coincides with the bohemian atmosphere. “It was wonderful to work with Krystal again,” Bensley reflects on their creative partnership. “Coolies Club is more than just a place to eat and drink. It’s an immersive experience that transports you to the pleasure palaces of the former red-light district with a modern twist.”
Krystal has infused her passion for art, fashion, history and storytelling into this latest project, using reclaimed tin pieces, artworks, bold palettes and vintage furnishings. “Growing up in our family’s shophouse in this neighbourhood,” Krystal says, “inspired me to reimagine a contemporary locale that speaks to the upscale bars and betting rooms where tin miners sought refuge after a hard day’s labour.” Together with Bensley, she has constructed a visually forward venue that manifests Phuket’s cultural tapestry, reminiscent of the island’s vitality during the 19th century, when sailors, gypsies and labourers converged from across the globe.
The club exhibits classic Chinese Baroque architecture, featuring ornate wooden doors, elaborate Chinese fretwork, and an arresting frontage in hues of white, turquoise and antique red. Inside, Bensley has fashioned a compelling interior employing period pieces in coral and jade green tones to recreate the ambience of opium hubs. On the lower level, the club offers a curated menu of imaginative cocktails, such as the wood-smoked negroni Miner’s Whisper, vodka-based Mama’s Twist, tequila-based Spicy Maria with blended Thai herbs and chili, and the bitter-edged Courtesan’s Kiss. Guests can also enjoy fine wines and artisan spirits, paired with a selection of bar bites and hearty dishes. Upstairs, the club houses two private bedroom for exclusive opium den dining experiences. Krystal also plans to work with local musicians to host themed events at the space, along with regular performances to entertain visitors.
The Coolies Club is now open to the public at 11-13 Soi Romanee, Phuket City, operating Tuesday to Sunday from 12pm to 12am. Guests staying at The Slate, Phuket will also be able to explore the Club as part of their experience.
