The Glenfiddich Grand Series celebrates the unexpected collision between two luxury worlds. Their latest expression has proven the impact of disruptive approaches, when a long-established spirits producer isn’t afraid to experiment with new maturation techniques. Their latest expression, Grand Château, is a limited-edition 31-year-old single malt that is the first release by the distillery to use red wine casks from the Bordeaux region used in the finishing of the whisky—delivering an unparalleled, class-defining execution.

After the whisky spends 22 years maturing in American oak casks, the extended nine-year finish in Bordeaux wine casks brings forth the layered, fruit-laden profile of the Grand Château. Glenfiddich’s malt master, Brian Kinsman, recognises the versatility and exceptional quality of these Bordeaux red wine casks. “Although wine is becoming an increasingly popular choice for maturation within the single malt category, it remains relatively rare to see whiskies finished in a Bordeaux red wine cask, making this an incredibly intriguing and collectible bottling,” Kinsman says.

Glenfiddich confidently experiments with a lengthy second finish, even with a whisky that is well over 20 years old. “Nine years spent cocooned in these extraordinary Bordeaux red wine casks results in an exceptionally vibrant liquid which intensifies Glenfiddich’s classic fruity character, balanced with the somewhat unusual notes of deep oak and warming vanilla,” Kinsman says. With such a prolonged finish, the flavour profile notably departs from its familiar fruit-forward hints of green apple and pear. Then, the sensory experience still offers a richly crafted sip thanks to the distinct barrels used in making Grand Château.
On the nose, the whisky greets sippers with an inviting vanilla, almost reminiscent of toasted nuts. A weighty presence on the palate, the whisky strikes with a quick surge of tannins. It then mellows into saturated stamps of caramelised cherries and apples. Notes of spices, pepper and a whisper of toasted oak emerge onto one’s tastebuds. The mouthfeel is supple and smooth, with a lingering finish that highlights its depth and solidity.
Glenfiddich also collaborated with French street artist André Saraiva to design the interior packaging of Glenfiddich Grand Château, going the extra mile with The Artist’s Edition by reworking 250 Toile de Jouy boxes. Saraiva’s playful interpretation of the whisky’s story is featured on these limited edition boxes, which spotlight his trademark ‘Mr. A’ character. This street art figure—known for appearing on the streets of Paris, New York, Shenzhen, London and Seoul—whimsically depicts the whisky distilling narrative.

Saraiva reflects on his collaboration with Glenfiddich, saying: “When Glenfiddich asked me and (Mr. A) to collaborate, it felt like a perfect match. As a whisky lover, the connection to France and the bespoke nature of the liquid opened a world of creative possibilities. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Scotland, where I was able to truly experience the history and heritage. These unique adventures are reflected in my drawings and artwork I’ve created for this special collaboration.”
