“A tale as old as time”, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast has enchanted people for generations with the 1991 original animated feature. This, in turn, inspired an original stage production that played for more than 13 years on Broadway, remaining to this day as one of the top 10 longest-running shows in Broadway history, as well as touring to 37 countries worldwide. The story has its roots in the 1740 novel La Belle et la Bête by French writer Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. It was soon after adapted by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont in 1756 and it is this version of the fairy tale that Disney took most inspiration from.
As Lumière says in the movie, “Ma chère mademoiselle, it is with deepest pride and greatest pleasure that we welcome you tonight.” From 11 December 2025 to 25 January 2026, be greeted by Lumière and other members of the musical as it makes its only Asia stop in Singapore at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, for a strictly limited season.
A Sneak Peek of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast: The Musical
In this brand-new production, the enduring love story of Belle and the Beast has been reimagined with breathtaking new sets, costume designs, and state-of-the-art technology to bring the timeless romance to life on Sands Theatre’s magnificent stage. Members of the original creative team behind the ground-breaking Broadway musical return to reimagine this timeless classic. Olivier Award nominee Matt West once again directs and choreographs, leading a stellar line-up that includes original composer Alan Menken, lyricist Tim Rice, book writer Linda Woolverton, scenic designer Stan Meyer, costume designer Ann Hould-Ward, and lighting designer Natasha Katz. When Beauty and the Beast first premiered on Broadway 31 years ago, this illustrious team collectively earned five Tony Award nominations, including a win for costume design.
“I’m excited about the reinvention of the show, which has grown up a lot with the help of technology, fabrics, costumes, lighting, sound design, sound effects, and magical illusions,” West said. “Disney and I have partnered to use them to bring the show to life in a new and inventive way with characters you know and love.”
The Asia Launch Held at ArtScience Museum, Singapore
This production, which first made its Australian debut in 2023, is produced by Disney Theatrical Group and presented in Singapore by Base Entertainment Asia. Shubshri Kandiah, who captivated Singaporean audiences with her portrayal of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s Aladdin the Musical during its 2019 season, will take the lead role as Belle. Interestingly, her parents were born in Malaysia and emigrated to Australia as teenagers, where they met. Brendan Xavier will also take centre stage as the Beast, an actor who won hearts as Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen the Musical in Singapore in 2023.
In conversation with actor Brendan Xavier
Tell us about your rehearsal process and how your portrayal of the Beast—a character who is both monster and man—evolved from the first read-through to the stage.
The rehearsal process was extremely collaborative and full of discussions. Regarding the character, we really dove into exactly who the Beast was and why he does things. This included a lot of setting up the context for the show. It evolved so much throughout the process, and I’d say it’s still evolving after almost three years. This is truly a testament to how dynamic and nuanced this story and these characters are.
The wigs and horns alone must weigh a ton. What’s something audiences might not realise about performing under all that makeup, costume, and prosthetics?
I think, for me, I only ever really feel completely like the Beast when I have the full costume and makeup on. It really helps me feel the weight of the character and informs how I move and interact on stage.

Belle and the Beast’s relationship moves from fear to true love. How did you and your co-star Shubshri Kandiah navigate that emotional shift and build believable chemistry along the way?
I think we both just took time to get to know each other as performers and understand each other’s process and method. Through that understanding, we were able to sync up our stories and our process, so that we can both be on the same page to create a believable interaction.
Beauty and the Beast is ultimately a story about transformation. How has this role transformed you, either as a performer or personally?
It’s helped me learn so much about myself and the subconscious limitations I put on myself. It really challenged me to be brave and go to places I never thought I’d go as a performer.
