When it came to hybridising the wildly popular Urus, Lamborghini was careful to respect the reasons that made the super SUV so well-received in the first place—the cocktail of power, performance and everyday usability.
In reality, however, it is the first two that makes a Lamborghini a Lamborghini, and the new plug-hybrid Urus SE (about RM1.03 million before taxes, duties and customisation) starts by keeping its twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine. By itself, it puts out up to 612bhp; combined with the permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that is located within the eight-speed automatic transmission, the total power output of the Urus SE is a mighty 789bhp. This makes it the most powerful Urus ever made—and a leader in its class. It will do 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds, and 0-200km/h in 11.2 seconds. The top speed is 312km/h, making it the fastest production vehicle in the segment. The 950Nm of available torque is reached at just 1,750rpm, too.
The Urus SE introduces a new electric torque vectoring system to manage the power delivery to all four wheels, working with the also-new electronic limited-slip differential in the rear axle to maintain a sports-car feel with ‘on demand’ oversteer. Combined with the adaptive air suspension, the Urus SE is thus just as prepared for any driving surface as its predecessor was. There are six driving modes, three for road and track, and three for off-roading, as well as a further four electric power modes. Of the latter, it includes an EV-only option with a promised 60km range and top speed of 130km/h.
“The uniqueness of the Lamborghini hybrid powertrain is that it has no compromise. For us, hybridisation means to add additional features and capability—more horsepower, more acceleration, more top speed, more comfort, less CO₂, more usability, and more driving modes,” explains Francesco Scardaoni, Region Director of Aumotobili Lamborghini Asia Pacific. “We only include additional features to make it perform even better than the car before. This was a clear statement since the beginning of our hybridisation phase.”
“The response to hybridisation has been amazing,” he says, referring to the success of the Revuelto—Lamborghini’s V12 hybrid successor to the Aventador that was launched last year. “The first customers that got their cars delivered were really happy about it. Lots of feedback—extremely powerful, but also extremely comfortable and easy to drive on an everyday basis. So, it’s a car that’s improved compared to the previous one.”
