The ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands Singapore presents Frida Forever, a series of engaging exhibitions celebrating the extraordinary life and footprint of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (on until 1 September 2024). Developed by Layers of Reality and the Frida Kahlo Corporation, this immersive presentation unfolds in three distinct sections—revealing Kahlo’s most memorable works that demonstrates her artistic virtuosity.
An uncompromising artist, Kahlo is regarded as one of the most influential female artists of the 20th century, and often depicted her personal struggles and resilience through many of her self-portraits and surreal compositions. The first exhibition, Frida Kahlo: The Life Of An Icon, contains eight thematic spaces that explore Kahlo’s multifaceted persona through photographs, films, digital art, and arresting installations. This section offers an in-depth look into her private life via a 360° projection, covering her formative years, childhood and adolescence—periods that significantly shaped her maturation as an artist. A vivid account of Kahlo’s devastating streetcar accident on 17 September 1925 is also featured in this segment.
The second exhibition, Laid Bare: Frida’s Inner World, provides an extensive view of Kahlo’s rare medical documents and the final years of her life—shedding light on her vulnerability and strength in manifesting a lifetime of chronic pain in her art. This chapter also includes exclusive interviews with Kahlo’s great-niece, Cristina Kahlo Alcalá, along with current medical professionals who impart modern perspectives on Kahlo’s health conditions and physical challenges. Furthering this retrospective is the Exquisite Corpse VR Experience that transports viewers into dreamlike landscapes of bold colour schemes and evocative textures. This virtual journey illustrates intimate moments of resilience and guidance that emerged while Kahlo rested in bed during her recoveries.
