The Millen Penang marks the island’s first Autograph Collection hotel, a handpicked group of unique, design-driven properties under the Marriott umbrella. The hotel building, formerly The Northam All Suite Hotel, was acquired by HNG Capital Sdn Bhd in 2016. In 2020, the group began a comprehensive transformation with a major renovation and rebranding, before quietly welcoming its first guests on 3 February 2025. Each of the hotel’s 146 rooms offers panoramic views of the Andaman Sea or George Town’s cityscape. The Sterling and Silver Suites rank among Penang’s largest two-bedroom presidential suites at 156 sq m each. One of Penang’s newest and most lavish retreats, the hotel officially celebrated its grand opening on 30 September 2025 with a sumptuous soirée.
A Grand Affair
The island’s upper echelon gathered at the Upperton Hall, the hotel’s grand ballroom, as they savoured hors d’oeuvre such as otak otak on toast and craft mocktails. The luncheon featured an English garden theme, inspired by the history of the Millionaire’s Row, where The Millen is located and was once home to British colonial administrators. The Arch String Quartet serenaded guests before a festive lion dance ushered in the guests of honour.

Dato’ Sean H’ng Chun Hsiang, Chief Executive Officer of HNG Capital, delivered the welcoming speech: “The opening of The Millen reflects our unwavering commitment to redefining luxury hospitality while honouring Penang’s heritage. More than just a hotel, The Millen supports local artisans, talents, and businesses, ensuring that tourism continues to create value for the community.”

George Varughese, Market Vice President at Marriott, Malaysia, then took to the stage. “As the world embraces travel again, I have no doubt that The Millen will inspire guests from near and far to discover Penang in new and meaningful ways. This is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the island, for our partners, and for everyone who will walk through these doors.”

YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, gave the opening speech while sharing, “It is a great honour to celebrate the grand opening of The Millen, the first Autograph Collection hotel in Penang. This remarkable property blends colonial heritage, sophistication, and a fresh vision for our state. The Millen embodies the very spirit of Penang, connecting the charm of the past with the energy of the present.”
Ribbon Cutting And Digital Signing Ceremony
A ribbon-cutting ceremony ensued, punctuated by a burst of colourful confetti. The hotel then marked the occasion with a digital signing ceremony that symbolised a modern step into its next chapter by Chow, accompanied by Dato’ Sean Hng; Tan Sri Dato Seri H’ng Bok San, Group Executive Chairman of HNG Capital Group; and Datin Seri Jessica H’ng of HNG Capital Group.
Guests then indulged in a spectacular feast featuring Spiced Lamb Loin with percik gratin dauphinois, wild ferns, and keluak tuile, accompanied by free-flowing wine as the occasion drew to a close.
