Some deem batik as a symbol of rekindled love, while others believe it grants protection against misfortune. Although its origin remains uncertain, what’s clear is that this textile art form has appeared in many parts of the world, inspired by everything from legends and colonial influences to geometrical motifs and nature.
In Malaysia, people have developed unique techniques and designs distinct to their own, and Malaysian batik has since been recognised as a cultural icon. As opposed to the intricate patterns that Indonesian batik is better known for, Malaysian batik features larger patterns that are more vivid and admired for its organic motifs that showcase the country’s verdant landscapes.

In modern times, batik is predominantly worn during official events and traditional ceremonies, but Farhan Omar and Ekram Faiz seek to shake up that convention. With the establishment of Kapten Batik in 2017, the duo continues to keep this traditional art alive, yet accessible for everyday fashion. “We want to change the way people see batik,” Farhan says. “To make it something young people can wear every day. Contemporary, relevant, and proudly Malaysian.”

Recently, the brand marked a new milestone with the launch of its flagship boutique in The Gardens Mall in Kuala Lumpur. In support of homegrown talents, Kapten Batik collaborated with award-winning interior designer, Matthew Lim Associates, to express its story through the space. “Our dream is to bring Malaysian-made batik to the international stage,” Matthew says. “The world deserves to see how we have reimagined our heritage.”

The boutique is impossible to overlook, with batik patterns that welcome guests by the entrance. Inside, the space feels grounded and calm, allowing guests to shop at their own pace. “It feels like home,” Ekram says. Meanwhile, the muted palette acts as the perfect backdrop for the vibrant batik pieces to stand out.

Guests will find apparel for women, children, and, intriguingly, menswear that takes the fashion scene to a whole new level. With Kapten Batik, men can enjoy more room for experimentation, a tough feat given the limited options in men’s fashion locally. The brand’s accessories are also not short on variety. From ties to espadrilles, the bold patterns are woven into every detail—proudly Malaysian through and through.
