Chateau Pichon Baron: A Century Of Pauillac Excellence

During a recent tasting at GoldBar KL, guests sampled a taste of Pauillac’s legacy in every pour.

On gravel‑rich Pauillac soils, blessed by the Gironde estuary, Château Pichon Baron’s vines flourish, producing wines among Bordeaux’s finest and earning a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé (Second Growth) distinction. Originally part of the vast Pichon de Longueville estate, the vineyard was divided in 1850 among the family, with Raoul Pichon de Longueville inheriting the portion that would become an age‑worthy Bordeaux producer. A year later, the château’s Renaissance‑inspired twin turrets were commissioned, quickly gaining architectural and historical significance.

AXA Millésimes acquired the estate in 1987, restoring its vineyards’ centuries‑old prestige to full glory. Today, the château’s stately façade stretches across a reflective ornamental pool, with an underground cellar reminiscent of French novelist Jules Verne’s Nautilus submarine. Every barrel reflects a disciplined and meticulous production process, all while remaining faithful to Pauillac’s distinctive character.

On a recent evening at GoldBar KL, LamboCellar hosted an intimate tasting of the estate’s finest reds, during which guests were guided through each pour by Xavier Sanchez, Commercial and Marketing Director of AXA Millésimes. The introductory pour opened with Les Griffons de Pichon Baron 2017, a pure, full‑bodied blend harvested from the estate’s gravelly terroir. Its rich carmine colour entices with notes of Morello cherry, strawberry and gentle spices, delivering a velvety palate that is both approachable and pleasing from the first sip.

Meanwhile, the Château Pichon Baron 2019 showcases the estate at its most expressive, drawn from the oldest vines on its most mature plots. A quintessential Pauillac, its layered depth impresses with an aromatic range of ripe black fruits and spicy undertones, built to gain complexity over time. Despite its intensity, the wine finishes on a polished note, making it a natural match for classic red meats, truffle‑laced dishes and herb‑forward cuisine.

By contrast, the Château Pichon Baron 2009 revealed even greater depth and maturity. A decade older and a crowd favourite, its bouquet is broader and more profound, developing greater coherence with each sip.

Whether you are a newcomer or a seasoned connoisseur, each vintage rewards patience and curiosity, as careful cultivation and cellar practices reflect the estate’s pinnacle of Bordeaux craftsmanship.
