The concept of an urban resort takes some getting used to. For the first guests at the newly opened Kerry Hotel, Hong Kong, that concept becomes a reality. Set to open on April 28th , this hotel is only the third Kerry Hotel in the world, after Shanghai and Beijing, and will occupy the shoreline of the Hung Hom Bay on Victoria Harbour.
At this five-star property – the fourth Hong Kong property of luxury hotel group Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts – its relaxed, understated style is lensed by architect and interior designer Andre Fu. His mastery of subtle luxury is amply showcased in his largest hotel project yet, where natural daylight streams into the hotel’s podium space, landscaped gardens and 546 rooms. Over 1,000 art pieces lend a hand to create that sense of design, in which many of the artworks was a special commission from leading Asian contemporary artists.
Your experience at Kerry Hotel, Hong Kong begins upon arrival in the cavernous lobby offering a panorama of the vast landscaped gardens, serene sculptures and, beyond that, Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour. A fabulous 50-metre Turkish onyx marble wall at check-in is an unmistakable indication of the property’s extravagant development costs as are the ample use of 20,000 rock crystals and a 15.3-metre LED screen at its 1,756 sq metre grand ballroom, the largest in all of Hong Kong.
Rooms are an experience in functional and contemporary design, with custom-built open closets, complimentary mini-bar selections, free videos on demand over Internet Protocol Television and Asian design touches. The property’s proximity to the water also enables rooms to have that languid sense of place, with over 60 per cent of rooms overlooking the waterway and Hong Kong Island’s kinetic skyline.
Food and beverage options abound, with five restaurants and a bar to indulge in. Centred around the hotel’s idea of a neighbourhood nexus, Dockyard positions international culinary talents under one roof, with opening hours which begin at mid-morning till late at night. Meanwhile, the all-day dining Big Bay Café showcases international and local cuisines at seven live-action pavilions. Red Sugar, which doubles up as bar and a classy event joint, possesses the 270-degree wraparound terrace and also offers live music in the evenings. This bar will also be serving its own craft brew – akin to Kerry Hotel in Pudong’s micro brewery – where local flavours like kumquat and mandarins will be infused into the beverage.
Augmenting the idea of an urban resort is the recreational amenities, from 24-hour fitness to a heated 25-metre outdoor swimming pool. A sports club and park is in the works as well, further strengthening the hotel’s core promise of being connected and anchored to the neighbourhood. A fleet of Audi A6, BMW X5 and Bentleys offer transportation options, as does the connectivity to the Hung Hom Ferry Pier, Whampoa MTR Station and Hung Hom Train Station.
