the way we wear
Although separated by more than a century, Royal Selangor and homegrown streetwear brand Pestle & Mortar Clothing are rooted in the same philosophy of hard work and entrepreneurship. Fitting, then, that two have decided to collaborate on Royal Selangor x Pestle & Mortar Clothing (RSXPMC, for less of a mouthful), a limited edition capsule collection comprising four garments, a tote bag and a cap.
Founded by a trio of friends in 2010, Pestle & Mortar has quickly grown to become one of Southeast Asia’s top streetwear brands. They bring their sharp eye for cool cuts and savvy style to the collection, each piece of which features an embedded bespoke Royal Selangor pewter piece. The all-black Worker Shirt (limited to 50 pieces worldwide), for example, features pewter buttons, while the Worker Jacket features the tiger from the Tiger Pewter touchmark, as Royal Selangor was once known.
Royal Selangor’s history is dotted throughout the collection. Graphics found on its delivery vans in 1962 have found their way into Pestle & Mortar’s signature Pocket Tee, which has been given a hammered finished surface. The style of a pewter teaset illustration featured on Royal Selangor plastic bags in the 1960s and 70s makes the leap onto a white tee featuring, what else?, a pestle and mortar. Not merely limited to the garments, the Heritage Tote Bag features Royal Selangor’s first factory in Setapak in the 1970s, while the Dad Cap has Pestle & Mortar’s flying mechanic logo in a hammered-finish pewter.
The collection is now available at Royal Selangor’s flagship store in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and Pestle & Mortar’s flagship in Bangsar.
