Wining and dining in Georgetown, Penang
The rapid gentrification of Penang’s capital city George Town has thrown up a mix of cafes boasting Le Cordon Bleu-qualified chefs and elevated peranakan cuisine. The latest in this culinary parade is Chateau 33, a cosy restaurant and lounge which flourishes by combining French gastronomic references and a more global palate within its extensive menu.
One may partake in a variety of surf and turf, from a kobe steak prepared with the lightest of char to succulent lobsters, king prawns and lamb rack, before polishing the meal with Crepes Suzette. Chateau 33’s opulent cellar stacks old and new world vintages from floor to ceiling, in an ambience of stone masonry which recalls the rambling mansions of 17th– and 18th-century France. Little oriental motifs such as a pair of terracotta-inspired bronze figurines provide an adroit juxtaposition.
One may further choose to dine, for utmost privacy, in a private room catering for up to 20, or to enjoy cigars and a selection of Scotch and Japanese whiskies in one of four private rooms.
