The inaugural Vintage Vault offers a range of expressions from Diageo Reserve

Along the rapidly gentrified Lebuh Muntri in Penang, the watering hole that is Mish Mash has quietly gained a reputation for stocking rare expressions of whiskies, spirits and cigars. For some time now, its proprietor and resident bartender/mixologist, Ben Ng, had wanted to introduce his clientele to the more inaccessible whiskies and other forms of spirits (including aged tequila).

Recently, this desire came to fruition when stocks of rare and limited whiskies under the Diageo Reserve collection recently made landfall. For Ng, whose own connoisseurship of spirits grew from his years tending bars in the UK, the idea of this Vintage Vault is to provide connoisseurs with a better idea of the plethora of options in the market.

Over two nights, this inaugural Vintage Vault, in partnership with Moet Hennessy Diageo, served up drams of the Islay Lagavulin 12 Years (RM530), as well as tastings of the bourbon- and sherry-matured Mortlach Rare and fruity Oban 14 Year Old. Up for grabs as well was the Caol Ila 17 Year Old (RM500), the Dalwhinnie 25 Year Old (RM1,800), the Brora 37 Year Old (RM7,200) and the elusive Port Ellen 32 Year Old (RM13,250).

With Rajesh Joshi, Marketing Director of Johnnie Walker & Diageo’s Luxury Portfolio in attendance, there was also the extra incentive of the Johnnie Walker trunk. Inside, it held the Limited Edition Johnnie Walker Blue Label, the superlative King George V and the Clynelish Select Reserve, a coastal highland expression comprising butterscotch, rich fruit and cocoa notes.
