Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Oud Satin Mood Scent Recalls A Geometric Wonder From The Islamic World

In 2016, Francis Kurkdjian, an industry insider who established his brand in 2009 after decades creating such iconic scents as Jean Paul Gaultier’s Le Male, was inspired by Laotian oud wood – one of the rarest and most precious ingredients in the world of perfumery to create an eau de parfum called Oud Satin Mood. This scent was conceived to be at once seductive and mysterious. It was what Kurkdjian describes as: “a quintessential French composition whose major and minor accords strike a perfect balance.”

Now in 2022, the shimmering sensuality of Oud Satin Mood is broadened into new rituals and, a limited run of only 350 pieces, a 200ml bottle which features a mashrabiya-inspired garb (RM6,680). The decorative elements on this limited edition objet d’art is the result of eight hours of craftsmanship by artisans who work on both sides of the deep blue bottle – tapping into their savoir faire to recreate the sense of spiritual architecture that pervades the Islamic world, frequently associated to the houses of the urban elite.

The mysterious, intense depths of oud – more ethereal than true musk and spicier than patchouli – are also offered in the extension of fragrance rituals under the Oud Satin Mood collection. An Oud Satin Mood mineral-and-vegetable candle (RM475) blends the wood with roses and delicate violets, all of which is presented in a 280 gramme bisque porcelain jar handcrafted in Limoges, with a 55-hour burn span.
