Of the Breguet line-up, the Classique Calendrier 7337 is the most emblematic of the pocket watches that Abraham-Louis Breguet created more than 200 years ago. With its guilloche textures paired with brushed chapter rings, offset dials, window indicators, Roman numerals and, of course, Breguet-style hands, the 7337 looks almost identical to a vintage Breguet pocket watch, albeit with a sleeker profile and other modern refinements. It is a particularly slim execution; its 39mm case, which is available in white or rose gold, is paired with a sub-10mm thickness. All this despite the complexity of the movement, which includes day, date and moonphase indicators as well as a hand-hammered gold moon on a background of sandblasted clouds and star-studded blue lacquer.
The 7337 has been a Breguet collection mainstay since the late 2000s, but this year receives a minor update that brings it more in line with the current trend of restrained luxury. The small seconds indicator is probably the biggest difference, having lost the chequered pattern of the last-generation 2020 iteration to become better integrated with the main dial. The windows for date and day, at two and 10 o’clock respectively, have been pared back into linear geometric forms, while the border of the main dial is also relatively unadorned. The guilloche patterning – a very fine Clous de Paris hobnail for the off-centred dial and a swirled barleycorn motif for the outside – is also finer than before, giving the watch a much more understated appearance.
Last but not least, the self-winding calibre 502.3 QSE1 beats at a vintage 3Hz while boasting a distinctly modern silicon hairspring. It is one of Breguet’s thinnest movements, coming in at just 2.4mm thick, and through the display caseback one can observe the familiar Breguet signature: the off-centre oscillating rotor sports its own barleycorn patterning.
The changes, then, to the 7337 are minor and rooted in incremental aesthetic evolution. The core design elements have stayed strong throughout the centuries, and today it makes for an elegant, classic and timeless dress watch with a hint of complication flair.
