Lexus Sets A New Standard For Brutal Luxury With The GX 550
With its new domineering stance, the GX 550 brings luxury to the toughest terrains.
For those who measure their weekends in roads explored, the Lexus GX 550 makes a compelling companion. Equally at home gliding through the city as it is venturing deep into the countryside, the luxury SUV blends long-distance comfort, exquisite craftsmanship, and genuine off-road capability, making every escape—even the spontaneous ones—a delightfully smooth adventure.
On the smooth comfort of freshly paved city streets, the GX 550 performs with the composed assurance one expects of a Lexus. With an electronically controlled full-time all-wheel drive (AWD) system and adaptive suspension, the GX 550 navigates urban roads with a classic sense of luxurious smoothness. Paired with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 engine, the luxury SUV surges forward like a charging beast, dispatching the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just seven seconds.
Built on a robust body-on-frame architecture, the GX 550 retains the rugged mechanical underpinnings that have long made the model a favourite among discerning overlanders. This latest iteration, however, feels especially refined. Its squared-off stance, shorter overhangs, prominent wheel arches, and reinterpreted spindle grille, integrated with the front skid plates, lend the SUV that signature commanding stance. At the rear, the GX 550 presents a variation of the signature L-shaped Lexus light bar, with the tail lamps connecting to form a single continuous line of light across the rear, continuing the façade’s confident presence.
This audacious exterior, of course, does not come without warrant. Where tarmac turns to rutted trails, that is where the GX 550’s true capabilities shine. The full-time AWD system offers Drive Mode Select, allowing the SUV to switch between six driving modes, including a Custom mode enabled by the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system that continuously controls the damping force of the shock absorbers on all four wheels in response to driving operations and road surface conditions, such as giving better grip and stability when tackling off-road terrain. Further, with a minimum ground clearance of 220mm and a minimum turning radius of 6.0m, the GX 550 drives across the off-roads with effortless poise and confidence.
For those who intend to venture even further beyond the beaten path, the five-seat Overtrail variant may be the more compelling proposition. Riding on 18in wheels shod with all-terrain tyres, it offers excellent outward visibility, particularly useful when navigating tight trails. The SUV is also equipped with Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), an industry-first system offering six selectable terrain modes (Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, Rock, and Sand/Mud in L4), optimising drive power, suspension, and brake performance to best match the prevailing surface conditions. When navigating challenging terrain, the Overtrail’s Crawl Control comes into play, maintaining a steady pace by automatically managing engine power and braking, along with the Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS), which improves stability, reduces head toss, and maximises traction.
Despite the GX 550’s rugged exterior styling and function, luxurious environs true to its class await aboard. Central to the interior experience is the Tazuna Cockpit, a human-centred environment inspired by the Japanese word for ‘horse reins’. Every control and display is positioned to minimise hand and eye movement, keeping the driver intuitively connected to the journey ahead. Front seats on both variants feature eight-way power adjustments with memory function, seat ventilation, and heating.
In addition, the seven-seat comfort-oriented Luxury+ variant also adds two-way power lumbar support and a massage function for both driver and front passenger, a 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system with subwoofer, and even a cool box, integrated right into the centre console.
