The pieces that have driven a big year for the market.

This recent auction season has signalled a change in the art-world market. Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Phillips sold US$2.5 billion worth of artworks in May, a leap from the US$1.3 billion the trio generated at auction in the same period last year, The New York Times reported.

But what has helped reignite that fervour? The sale of Condé Nast titan S.I. Newhouse’s art cornucopia certainly led the charge, as well as many other sought-after pieces from the treasure trove of other major collectors and, per the NYT, a return across the industry to deliberate bidding and sensible pricing, as well as quality items going up for grabs.

As a result, we’ve had plenty of heavy hitters realise sky-high prices this year. Here are the 15 most expensive art lots sold at auction in 2026—so far, at least.
