Going Solo

Alila goes urban with the Alila Solo, it’s first urban segment

Central Java’s ancient capital of Surakarta, or Solo, as it is better known, is considered the cradle of Javanese culture. Its present day incarnation, however, is one the fastest developing economic centres of Indonesia, placing it on the threshold of becoming a fully fledged metropolis. In a prescient move, the rapidly growing Alila Group has made its presence felt with the Alila Solo, an arresting configuration of nine towers ranging from 11 to 28 storeys sheathed in marble, travertine and granite that rise like futuristic monoliths above a tree-lined street.

Touted as a luxury urban retreat, the Alila Solo bears all the marks of this eco-luxe and design-driven experiential brand. Melbourne-based architecture firm Denton Corker Marshall have inserted 255 rooms into the property and the hotel boasts impressive resort-inspired facilities, the city’s largest event space and a soon-to-be iconic rooftop bar. Drawing from Solo’s rich history, an enormous batik installation dominates the lobby’s ceiling – spanning it like a floating curtain while the rooms continue this theme with dreamy murals inspired by wayang (traditional Indonesian puppet operas).
