La Cité du Vin is dedicated to the pleasures of the vine
Calling it a theme park might seem erroneous; there are no roller coasters here, nor boat rides nor stage shows. Instead, it is a physical encyclopaedia of wine, wrapped up into a building designed to look like wine swirling in a glass, designed by architects Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières.
Opened the June 1, 2016, the world’s first wine ‘theme park’ is located in Bordeaux, France, taking visitors on a tour of wine culture through the ages over 20 themed areas. Instead of popcorn, there is wine tasting with oenologists. Instead of Ferris wheels, there is hands-on participation in the messy wine-making process. And, of course because this is France, there are vittles to accompany the bottles – Chef Nicolas Lascombes helms Le 7 restaurant, serving up bistro fare with a 360-degree view of the river Garonne and that city.
