Poised to perform
In motorsport, and indeed in the automotive circle, there are few names more respected in the black art of aerodynamics than Adrian Newey. Red Bull’s chief technical officer and celebrated F1 design specialist lent his expertise to Aston Martin to develop and produce the AM-RB 001 hypercar; the first road car to come from the two brands’ alliance.
Much of Newey’s efforts were focused on underfloor aerodynamics, hence the aggressive bodywork closer to the ground. This allowed Aston Martin executive vice president and chief creative officer Marek Reichman much freedom to craft car’s upper surfaces, resulting in the breathtaking form.
Technical specifications are unknown at time of print, but the heart has been confirmed to be a naturally aspirated V12 that could allow the AMRB-001 to hit the hallowed 1:1 power-to-weight-ratio. Transferring power to the ground is an innovative transmission, also conceived by Newey and developed by Red Bull Advanced Aerodynamics.
Due for first deliveries in 2018, the AM-RB 001 will be engineered and assembled under the purview of Aston Martin vice president and chief special operations officer David King at a specific facility in the Gaydon complex – initially purpose built for the One-77. A total of between 99 and 150 road cars and 25 track-only versions will eventually roll out, with the latter projected to perform at the level of today’s LMP1 Le Mans sports prototypes.
