Level up, 8-bit style, with the Anya Hindmarch x Mandarin Oriental KL Afternoon Tea

October 20, 2016

Let the games begin

Taking no prisoners and aiming for the highest-scoring high tea yet, British accessories designer Anya Hindmarch has joined forces with Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur to present Afternoon Tea by Anya Hindmarch. Drawing on her Autumn Winter/2016 collection, the special afternoon tea set (RM 108 per person) celebrated the coin-operated joys of retro arcade games including Tetris, Pac-Man, and Space Invaders.

Anthony Hoyle, the hotel’s new Executive Pastry Chef, wittily incorporated Anya Hindmarch’s signature graphics into sweet treats such as an ‘OMG!’ Black Forest waffle cone and an edible red velvet handbag painted with giant pixels. Canary-yellow lemon macaroons came stamped with Smileys, raspberry millefeuilles were topped with red alien invaders, while whipped chocolate ganache brownies bore googly eyes – just a few examples of the playful visuals on show.

Amidst the colourful tiers of pastries, the set – served at Lounge on the Park between October 3rd and November 20th – also included a selection of finger sandwiches (the Cajun chicken and guacamole filling proved particularly irresistible). A choice of raisin or plain scones was offered, with a combination of lemon curd and clotted cream adding a welcome touch of citrusy sunshine to the afternoon. As far as an exploration of pixelation and digital design, Anya Hindmarch couldn’t have found a tastier canvas to work on.
